Lt. Cmdr. Michael Valania, a Newark, Del., native, graduated from the Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 2015, and commissioned through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps.  

Valania’s sea duty assignments include duty aboard destroyers in the Atlantic Fleet. During his two surface warfare officer tours, he deployed to the Arabian Gulf, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, North Sea, Norwegian Sea, and Barents Sea. He served as the communications officer aboard USS Roosevelt (DDG 80) and navigator aboard USS Roosevelt (DDG 80). 

Lt. Cmdr. Valania laterally transferred to the public affairs community in 2020. 

His assignments as a public affairs officer include Deputy Public Affairs Officer to the Secretary of the Navy, Deputy Public Affairs Officer to the Chief of Naval Operations, and Navy News Desk Action Officer for the Navy Office of Information in Washington, D.C. 

His current assignment is as the Assistant Character Development Officer at the United States Naval Academy.

Valania’s decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (one gold star), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (one gold star); and various unit, campaign and service awards.
