Week 13

Q1. Describe the difference between coaching and mentoring. (NL110)

A1. In short, mentoring involves an exchange of knowledge and wisdom and typically requires someone senior or more experienced passing on advice, guidance, and knowledge to someone less experienced. As such, the mentor must possess some level of expertise in the subject being discussed.

In contrast, coaching is a partnership between a coach and coaching partner that focuses on addressing a specific problem, challenge, or opportunity. Coaches do not need to be knowledgeable in the subject under discussion, nor do they need to be part of one’s work unit. In a coaching relationship, the coaching partner drives the conversation, and is led by the coach to generate their own ideas and solutions.

In short, mentoring can be thought of as a “learn from me” approach while coaching can be thought of as a “learn with me” approach.

Q2. How is character and habit related? (NE203)

A2. A state [of character] arises from [the repetition of] similar activities. Hence we must display the right activities, since differences in these imply corresponding differences in the states. It is not unimportant, then, to acquire one sort of habit or another, right from our youth; rather, it is very important, indeed all-important.
