Q2. What type of power do you think is most important? What type of power do you see used the most? Why do you think that is? (NL110)
A2. The types of power are:
- Referent: The power of relationships. Takes awhile to develop because it relies on strong relationships. The downside is that as your referent power grows, so does the referent power of those you lead due to the reciprocal nature of relationships. This may cause you to do something you feel is wrong because of the referent power that others hold over you.
- Expert: The power of knowledge. This power can be situational and doesn’t relate to rank. For example, when qualifying as a Surface Warfare Officer, Ensigns may be trained in part by Seamen who are the subject matter experts on a particular piece of equipment/watch station.
- Legitimate: The power of rank, or organizational role. In the military this too may be situational. The Officer of the Watch has more legitimate power than other LTs due to the requirements of the watch.
- Reward: Influencing others due to one’s control over desired resources. This may include things such as giving a weekend for maxing the PRT or a squad leader buying a smoothie for a Plebe who does well on ProKnow.
- Coercive: Influencing others through punishment. This type of power is often seen as a negative base of power. An interesting discussion: is coercive power necessary sometimes? Think about breaking MIDREGs or laws.
