Marine Corps

Overview

Fleet Marines who join the detachment extend the commander's intent on the Yard — informing and influencing midshipmen through daily presence, company mentorship, summer training support, and engagement across four years at the Academy. To apply for USNA Marine Detachment billets, read the annual MARADMIN detailing billet vacancies for the following year. That message defines which billets are available, eligibility requirements, and submission instructions.

Important: Application packages are submitted electronically to MMOA-3 via the board portal — not to the detachment directly. All required documents are combined into a single PDF for processing. Board correspondence is addressed to "President, U.S. Service Academy Selection Board."

Billet types

LEAD Master's Program (8803)

The Leadership, Education and Development (LEAD) program produces the additional MOS of 8803. Participants PCS to Annapolis for a 36-month tour: 12 months of graduate education (sponsored by Naval Postgraduate School, hosted at USNA), followed by a 2-year utilization tour as a Company Officer of Midshipmen. All LEAD students must arrive NLT 31 May of the summer they are expected to report.

Note: LEAD is no longer screened via CCLEB. Do not follow application steps on the USNA LEAD website — those instructions are for other audiences. Use the MARADMIN and the requirements below.

Faculty and staff billets

Available billets carry Billet MOS (BMOS) codes of 0102, 8006, and 88XX. Most 8006 and 0102 billets do not require graduate education as a prerequisite. Reference the annual MARADMIN for specific billet availability and education requirements.

Academic instructor billets (88XX)

Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) or Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) students may earn an Additional MOS (AMOS) and serve a utilization tour at USNA as an instructor, contingent on degree program. The MARADMIN lists available billets and required AMOS codes, including 8220, 8820, 8824, 8826, 8844, 8846, and 8850.

Advanced Degree Program (8878)

Screened and selected via CCLEB and CPIB, this program offers a Master's in History with AMOS 8878. Payback tours take place at USNA as a Military Historian / History Instructor.

Can I apply for multiple billets?Yes. List each billet you want to be considered for in your application.
Who can answer questions about my package?Contact the Detachment Chief of Staff via detachment leadership. Allow time for a response during board season.
