Marine Corps

Marines on the Yard

Who the Marines are, where they serve, and which community they belong to.

Marines at the Naval Academy are not one monolithic group. They serve in distinct communities with different missions — but all contribute to developing midshipmen for service as Navy and Marine Corps officers. If you are asking "where are the Marines?" or "which Marine should I talk to?", start with the community that matches your question.

Marine Detachment (MARDET)

Sampson Hall · Marine Detachment offices

The USNA Marine Detachment runs the Marine Corps engagement program: informing, influencing, assessing, selecting, and equipping midshipmen for commissioning as Marine officers. MARDET staff coordinate summer training (Leatherneck, MAGTF, PROTRAMID), selection, accessions, and detachment administration — nested within the Naval Academy mission to develop midshipmen morally, mentally, and physically.

Talk to MARDET if you need: selection guidance, summer training questions, or detachment-level policy.

Company Marine Mentors

Bancroft Hall · Across all 36 companies

Each of the Brigade's 36 companies has a dedicated Marine officer mentor. Mentors live and work alongside midshipmen — informing and influencing them at the individual level, preparing interested mids for Leatherneck, and supporting career conversations throughout four years at the Academy.

Talk to your mentor if you need: company-level guidance, PROTRAMID/Leatherneck prep, or an MOS conversation.

Company Officers (Marine)

Bancroft Hall · Commandant's Department

Marine officers serve as company officers within the Commandant's Department, leading midshipman companies day-to-day alongside Navy company officers. They are responsible for the professional development, accountability, and welfare of mids in their company — distinct from the mentor role, though some Marines may serve in related leadership billets.

Talk to your company officer if you need: disciplinary, administrative, or company leadership matters.

Academic Instructors

Academic buildings across the Yard

Marine officers and staff serve as instructors in academic departments — including the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, engineering, and other divisions. They teach courses, advise midshipmen academically, and model the scholar-warrior ethos.

Talk to an instructor if you need: academic mentorship in their department or perspective on teaching billets.

Athletics & Extracurricular Coaches

Fields, gyms, and club spaces across the Yard

Marines coach club sports, combatives, and other extracurricular programs. These officers build character and resilience outside the classroom — often the Marine you meet at practice is not your company mentor but still a valuable resource.

Talk to a coach if you need: athletics-related mentorship or Marine perspective through your sport or club.

Commandant's Staff & Support Billets

Commandant's Office · Various Yard locations

Additional Marines serve on the Commandant's staff, in support roles, and in specialized billets (LEAD program, ethics and leadership, etc.). They contribute to brigade-wide programs and midshipman development beyond a single company.

Talk to these Marines if you need: guidance on a specific program they run — or ask your mentor to point you to the right person.
