Midshipmen in classroom

Department activities

Midshipmen can select among a number of department activities to supplement their coursework. Foremost is the Naval Academy Foreign Affairs Conference (NAFAC) directed by midshipmen every April. NAFAC themes focus on leading global issues relevant to the Navy, Academia and policy makers.

The Department also sponsors the Academy's highly successful policy debate team.  Navy Debate was founded in 1946 by future Admiral William J. Crowe; since then, the team has gone on to have national competitive success.  Navy Debate competes in both the American Debate Association (ranked 12th overall squad) and the National Debate Tournament (ranked 55th overall squad); the team has opportunities for both experienced debaters and those new to argumentation.  Director of Debate Danielle O'Gorman is also the Vice President of the American Debate Association and the Chair of the District 7 (Midatlantic) NDT Committee.  She can be contacted at x36853 or verney@usna.edu.  The team's website can be found here: http://www.usna.edu/MidActivities/ECA/Debate.php

Other interesting opportunities include Model United Nations, Pi Sigma Alpha Honorary Society, an active Internship program, interesting travel experiences and the Voluntary Grad Ed program.
