Trumpet
Musician 1st Class Bryce Call, from Brier, WA, began playing trumpet at the age of 10. While attending Mountlake Terrace High School he participated in the Essentially Ellington Jazz Competition and Festival in New York City and performed with world-renowned trumpet soloist Wynton Marsalis. He earned a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies in 2014 from Brigham Young University and a Master of Music in Trumpet Performance in 2016 from the University of Idaho. In 2022 he completed a Doctor of Musical Arts in Trumpet Performance at The Hartt School, University of Hartford. His primary teachers include Vern Sielert, Sean Butterfield, and Phil Snedecor.
Call has performed with Aretha Franklin, The Four Tops, the Bob Curnow Big Band, the New London Big Band, the Marcus Lewis Big Band, Joe McCarthy’s Afro Bop Alliance, and the Topeka Symphony Orchestra among others. He has also shared the stage and recording studio with trumpet greats Jon Faddis, Allen Vizzutti, Dave Douglas, Rick Baptist, and Rex Richardson. In 2024 Call performed with acclaimed violin soloist Alex Markov at Carnegie Hall. As an educator he has been a faculty member at Eastern Connecticut State University and Washburn University.
In 2016, Call enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and served for 6 years as a member of the U.S.
Coast Guard Band stationed in New London, CT. During this time he performed and toured with
the Concert Band, Ceremonial Band, Brass Quintet, and as lead trumpet with the Guardians Big
Band and Beacons Jazz Ensemble, including a performance at the Kennedy Center’s Millenium
Stage. In 2020 he represented the Coast Guard in a collaborative recording with the Airmen of
Note’s Virtual Inter-Service Jazz Ensemble.
In 2024, Call auditioned and was selected for assignment to the U.S. Naval Academy Band.
Following the Veterans’ training at RTC Great Lakes he reported for duty as trumpet
instrumentalist with the Bravo Zulu Brass Band, brass ensemble, marching band, and
ceremonial units.
Call’s awards include the Coast Guard Achievement Medal and the Coast Guard Good Conduct
Medal.
