Chief Musician Samuel Doo-Sik Chin

Clarinet

Chief Musician Samuel Doo-Sik Chin, a native of Seoul, South Korea, became a naturalized United States citizen in 2005.  He received a Bachelor of Music in clarinet performance from the University of Michigan and a Master of Music from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, receiving scholarships from both institutions. His teachers include Douglas Cornelson, Deborah Chodacki, and Daniel Gilbert. 

Before joining the Navy, Chin performed with the Detroit Symphony Civic Orchestra, National Symphony Summer Institute Orchestra, Michigan Philharmonic Orchestra and Symphonic Band, and the Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra. He was a prize-winner in the 1998 National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts’ (NFAA) Arts Recognition and Talent Search (ARTS). A strong advocate of music and arts education, Chin spent four seasons on the staff of Michigan Youth Ensembles. 

In 2005, Chin auditioned and was selected for assignment to the U.S. Naval Academy Band. Following recruit training at RTC Great Lakes, he reported for duty as clarinet instrumentalist with the marching band and ceremonial units, wind ensemble, and clarinet quartet. Chin's collateral duties include Operations Coordinator, Marching Band Unit Leader, Head Drum Major, and Enlisted Conductor.

Chin's awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards) and the Navy Good Conduct Medal (six awards).
