Chief Musician Matt Harriman began his musical studies with his grandfather at the age of 5. After graduation from Whitehall-Yearling High school in 2000, he attended The Ohio State University earning his Bachelor of Music Education while studying with Roy Poper and Timothy Leasure. He then went on to earn a Master of Music in trumpet performance from the University of Southern California where he studied with LA Philharmonic trumpeter Boyde Hood.
Harriman has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, The Brentwood-Westwood Symphony, The Columbus Symphony Brass Quintet, as well as the faculty brass quintets for The Ohio State and Otterbein Universities. While in Los Angeles, Harriman worked frequently in the studios, recording music for CDs, TV Shows, Movies, and Video Games.
A strong advocate of music education, Harriman spent two years as director of instrumental music at Maywood Academy High School in Maywood, California, a performing arts magnet for the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Career highlights with the USNAB include performing at the International Trumpet Guild Conference in Los Angeles, CA alongside legendary trumpeter Malcolm McNab; giving the world premiere of "Voyages", a work for solo trumpet and brass ensemble, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts; serving as principal trumpet in a joint performance with His Majesty's Royal Marines Band; performing principal trumpet on Benjamin Britten’s "War Requiem" for the USNA Distinguished Artist Series at the Strathmore, and traveling to Scotland in 2019 with the USNA Pipes and Drums.
In 2011, Harriman auditioned and was selected for assignment to the U.S. Naval Academy Band. Following recruit training at RTC Great Lakes, he reported for duty as a trumpet instrumentalist with the brass quintet, brass ensemble, marching band, and ceremonial units. He is currently the Trumpet Section Leader, the Public Affairs Office Chief, and serves as the Enlisted Representative and playing instructor with the USNA Pipes and Drums.
Harriman's awards include the Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards), Armed Forces Medal, Outstanding Volunteer Service Award, and the Navy Good Conduct Medal (four awards).
