Musician 1st Class Chris Phelps
Horn
Musician 1st Class Christopher Phelps is a native of Melbourne, Florida. In 2017, he graduated with a Bachelor of Music Education and a Bachelor of Music in horn performance from Florida State University, under the instruction of Michelle Stebleton. He earned a Master of Music degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in 2019, while studying with Denise Tryon.
Phelps has performed with orchestras throughout Northern Florida including the Tallahassee Symphony, Pensacola Symphony, and Sinfonia Gulf Coast. While at the University of Cincinnati, he received a Graduate Brass Quintet Fellowship and performed with the Bearcat Brass Quintet during the 2018-2019 season.
In 2019, Phelps auditioned and was selected for assignment to the U.S. Naval Academy Band. Following recruit training at RTC Great Lakes, he reported to Annapolis in 2020 for duty as horn instrumentalist with the marching band and ceremonial units, wind ensemble, brass ensemble, and brass quintet. He also serves as Brass Quintet Leading Petty Officer, Educational Outreach Coordinator, as well as the band’s Command Financial Specialist and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Division Head.
Phelps is a recipient of the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and Navy Good Conduct Medal.
