Gavin Taylor
Professor, Computer Science Department

Gavin's research interests cover numerous topics in Machine Learning and Data Science.  One area of interest is in Reinforcement Learning, or learned autonomy. Example ongoing projects include enabling chemical factories to learn to make a better product while running more efficiently (with McMaster University), and teaching weather stations to make the most informative measurements while conserving energy given weather forecasts, and the measurements of nearby stations (with NTNU in Norway).

Gavin is also particularly interested in Machine Learning performed on huge amounts of data on high performance computing systems, and helps direct the USNA's Center for High Performance Computing.  His research in this area includes understanding and improving the optimization of Machine Learning models on large distributed systems (with the University of Maryland-College Park).
