Student FAQs

How does a user get a Blackboard account if they are a new student?
In order to receive Blackboard access, the user must have MIDS enabled (i.e., they must have a MIDS account). Once they have a MIDS account, they will automatically receive a Blackboard account.  It may take up to two (2) hours for the Blackboard account to be created once MIDS has been enabled. If the user still doesn't have access after that time frame, they should contact the ITSC, at 3-3500 or submit an IT Web Help Desk Ticket to request assistance.
What if I cannot log in to Blackboard?
You must have an USNA or NAPS network in order to access Blackboard. If you have tried to login to the Blackboard site multiple times and are unsuccessful, try resetting your password using the USNA Password Portal.
Why don't I see my courses in the My Courses module?

After logging in to Blackboard, on the Home or Courses tabs, the student should see a module called My Courses, with a list of the courses they are enrolled in. If a course does not appear, there are several possible reasons:

  • The course instructor has not set the course to be available.
  • The student is not currently enrolled in the course. The instructor will need to verify the student's enrollment in MIDS.  It may take up to two (2) hours for the Blackboard course enrollment to be processed once it has been entered in MIDS.
How do I change my Notification settings?
About notification settings, if you see a list where your name appears, your courses appear in the Ultra experience. The notification system is always on.

On your activity stream's Notification Settings panel, you can choose which notifications you receive about activity in all your courses:

  • Activity stream: Choose which activities appear on your Stream page.
  • Email: If you want to receive email notifications, add an email address to your profile page. Then, choose how often and which activities you want to receive notifications for.
  • Push notifications: If you want to receive push notifications, choose how often and which activities you want to receive notifications for. Messages pop up on your mobile device if  you have the Blackboard Instructor mobile app installed.
Watch a video about notifications:  Video: Notification Settings shows how to set your notification options.
How do I review my Test Grades and Feedback?
  1. Current Grade displays your overall grade to date. Select the grade pill to learn more about how your overall grade is calculated. Your instructor may choose not to add an overall grade.
  2. For each item in the list, you can view the status and how many attempts you have. View which attempts you've started, submitted before the due date, and if any submissions are or will be late. After the due date passes, submission info appears in red.

*If you’re allowed only one attempt and submit before the due date, you won’t see the second line of text for the item.

  3. Details & Information panel — Select an item's name or grade pill to view details about its current grade. You can view how many attempts you have or if any submissions are late. If the due date has passed, you’re informed the next attempt will be marked late.
  4. Select the grade pill to access your submission. If you made multiple submissions, the Submission panel opens. If your instructor annotated a file you uploaded as your submission, you can view the annotations inline. Visit the assignment grades topic to see how multiple comments appear in your annotated PDF.
  5. After the due date passes, you may see zeros for work you haven't submitted. You can still submit attempts to update your grade. Your instructor determines grade penalties for late work. Learn more about zeros assigned to past due work.
  6. If your instructor uses attendance for grading, you'll see an attendance grade.

For Grades in the Blackboard App:  You can access your grades in two ways.

  • Select More on the main menu, then select Grades.
  • From an individual course:
    • Select Gradebook for an Ultra course
    • View Course Overview in an Original course
