Senior Marine Representative and Dean of the School of Humanities & Social Sciences

Colonel Reid enlisted in the Navy in 1992 and attended the Naval Academy Preparatory School, earning an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, where he graduated in 1997 with an honors degree in History. He is an infantry officer.

From 1998 to 2001, he commanded an 81mm mortar platoon and an anti-armor platoon and deployed as a weapons company Executive Officer for a unit deployment to Okinawa, Japan and a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) deployment to the Mediterranean Sea. Following his first Fleet Marine Force (FMF) tour, he was an instructor at The Basic School and Infantry Officer Course from 2001 to 2004 before attending resident Expeditionary Warfare School.

He returned to the FMF in 2005 to command Weapons Company, 3d Battalion, 1st Marines in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. He was assigned as aide-de-camp to the Commander, U.S. Marine Forces Central Command / Commanding General I Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF) in 2007 and 2008. Following that assignment, he returned to deploy as the Battalion Landing Team 3/1 Operations Officer on the 31st MEU in 2008.

In 2009, he attended resident Army Command & General Staff College before spending a year as a Congressional Fellow in the House of Representatives in 2010. In 2011, he reported to U.S. Central Command as the Afghanistan and Pakistan policy officer within the J-5. He later deployed as a NATO campaign planner in Kabul, Afghanistan before returning to Central Command to assume duties as the Strategic Analysis Branch Chief.

In 2014, he returned to the FMF as the Deputy G-3 at 2d Marine Division prior to commanding 1st Battalion, 2d Marines in 2015 and 2016. He was a 2016–17 National Security Affairs Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. From March 2017 to March 2019, he served as a special assistant to the Secretary of Defense. He was the 2019–2020 Commandant of the Marine Corps senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. From June 2020 through June 2022, he was the III MEF G-5.

From June 2022 through June 2024, he served as the Manpower Plans, Programs, and Budget Branch Head within Marine Corps Manpower & Reserve Affairs. Colonel Reid assumed the duties as the Senior Marine Representative and Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Naval Academy in June 2024.

Colonel Reid holds master's degrees from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, Boston University, Kansas State University, and the Army Command & General Staff College. He is a graduate of the MIT Seminar XXI program.

LtCol Thomas R. Giraldi

LtCol Giraldi graduated from Virginia Tech University with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in December 2006. Second Lieutenant Giraldi graduated from The Basic School in June 2007 and reported to Naval Flight Training in Pensacola, Florida. In August 2008, at his request, Second Lieutenant Giraldi was redesignated as a Marine Artillery Officer, and in November 2008 reported to the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course. Second Lieutenant Giraldi was promoted to First Lieutenant in December 2008.

In June 2009, First Lieutenant Giraldi reported to 3d Battalion, 10th Marines, where he served as a Fire Direction Officer, Executive Officer, and Battery Commander. He deployed to Afghanistan in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM from November 2009 to July 2010. First Lieutenant Giraldi assumed command of Kilo Battery in October 2010 and was promoted to Captain in December 2010. He deployed to Okinawa, Japan in support of the Unit Deployment Program from January to June 2011, and relinquished command in December 2011.

Captain Giraldi reported to 1st Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company (ANGLICO) in January 2012, where he served as a Joint Terminal Attack Controller, Firepower Control Team Leader (FCT), and the Company Assistant Operations Officer. He deployed to Afghanistan in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM from November 2012 to July 2013. In February 2014, Captain Giraldi reported to the Expeditionary Warfare School (EWS), Blended Seminar, and graduated with distinction in July 2014.

Captain Giraldi reported to 1st Battalion, 10th Marines in July 2014 and was assigned as the Assistant Operations Officer. In September 2014, he attached to 2d Battalion, 8th Marines where he served as the OIC of the Battalion Fire Support Team and the battalion Assistant Operations Officer. Captain Giraldi deployed to Romania in support of the Black Sea Rotational Force from February to July 2015. Captain Giraldi returned to 1st Battalion, 10th Marines in August 2015 and assumed command of Kilo Battery in November 2015.

In May 2016, Captain Giraldi was selected to be the Aide-de-Camp to the II MEF Commanding General, and was promoted to Major in July 2017. Major Giraldi reported to the Marine Command and Staff College in July 2017 and graduated with a Master's in Military Studies in June 2018. Following completion of the Command and Staff College, he reported to Expeditionary Warfare Training Group, Pacific (EWTGPAC) where he was assigned to the Expeditionary Fires Division, serving as the head of the Naval Surface Fires Support section and the course manager for the Supporting Arms Coordinating Center course. Major Giraldi deployed to Baghdad, Iraq from September 2018 to March 2019 in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.

In July 2020, Major Giraldi reported to 1st Battalion, 12th Marines, and served as the battalion Logistics Officer and the battalion Executive Officer. Major Giraldi reported to U.S. Pacific Fleet in July 2022 and assumed the role of Deputy Director of the Joint Fires section. In October 2022, Major Giraldi was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.

In June 2023, Lieutenant Colonel Giraldi assumed command of 1st ANGLICO, and following relinquishment of command in July 2025, he assumed his current duties as Detachment Chief of Staff, U.S. Naval Academy Marine Detachment.
