Loans
USNAM will consider loaning objects to other museums or professional organizations on a short-term basis for a specific purpose such as an upcoming exhibition. Borrowing institutions are required to care for USNAM objects in a manner consistent with professional museum standards.
It is against Museum policy to enter into long-term or third-party loans.
We generally do not consider unsolicited offers of temporary loans.
How to Borrow:
Step One: Please initiate a request at least 90 days prior to the requested start date by contacting: museumcurator@usna.edu
Step Two: Prepare a formal request to the USNAM Director (contact information will be provided by a curator).
The formal request should include a letter on letterhead and a completed AAM General Facilities Report.
The letter should include the following details:
- Title of the exhibition
- Purpose of the loan
- Length of the loan period
- The requested object’s accession number and title
- Justification for why the specific object(s) contribute to the exhibition
- Location of the exhibition with proposed start and end dates
- A statement confirming the borrower will pay for all expenses incurred, including transportation
- A statement confirming the borrower(s) will provide insurance for the object(s) while on loan
- Name, telephone number, and email address for the point of contact throughout the loan
If it is a traveling exhibit, the information above must be provided for all borrowing institutions.
Photos/renderings of the gallery which will be used for the exhibit are appreciated, but are not necessary.
Step Three: Once received, a loan request will be promptly reviewed by the Museum’s Loans Committee and the requestor will be notified of their decision.
