APPLICATION CYCLE IS OPEN FOR ACADEMIC YEAR 2028.

The U.S. Naval Academy has a need for qualified Navy Reserve officers, especially at the ranks of LT, LCDR, and CDR, to instruct in academic departments and serve as outstanding military role models for midshipmen. Successful candidates will have at least a master’s degree in an appropriate academic discipline. Orders typically commence in July and last for 3 years.
Recall Opportunities
Recall Opportunities will be considered for all academic departments at USNA. Applicants will be selected based on candidate qualifications and USNA manning short falls.
In order to apply, the following are required:

Once you have these documents, complete the application. Your application will be reviewed for completeness and the board will convene in December 2026.

Special Highlights for FY27 (Academic Years 2028-2030) Recall
As with all years, USNA employs fair hiring practices in evaluating applicants based on qualifications. Selection of qualified applications will be based on needs of the Naval Academy. As augments to Rotational Active Duty, reservists are encouraged to look at the Core Curriculum Courses when considering applying. Officers qualifying for duty in the Schools of Mathematics and Science, Engineering, Computing, and Weapons, or Humanities and Social Science will have at least a master’s degree in a discipline appropriate to a subject they are teaching. With that in mind, the following additional guidance has been provided to help candidates:
From the School of Engineering, Computing, & Weapons: All ECW Departments (Aerospace Engineering; Computer Science; Cyber Science; Electrical and Computer Engineering; Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering; Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering; and Weapons, Robotics, and Controls Engineering) seek candidates with a master’s or doctorate degree in Engineering, Physics, Math, any Computer discipline, or related discipline with applicable work experience in engineering, computing, cyber operations, or weapons fields, as relates to each department. In addition to core curriculum needs across all disciplines, we have targeted requirements for a lawyer with cyber operations experience (Cyber Science Department), candidates with ship design education or experience (Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Department), candidates specializing in mechanics (Mechanical and Nuclear Department), and candidates with specialized experience in aeronautics propulsion, aircraft design, or spacecraft structures and design (Aerospace Engineering Department).
From the School of Mathematics & Science: All academic departments have a need for qualified reserve officers with relevant master's degrees to teach introductory courses. To instruct calculus or introductory physics, the Mathematics and Physics departments will consider officers with a broad variety of technical master's degrees, though Physics or Applied Physics is preferred for the latter. The Chemistry department requires instructors with a master's in chemistry, chemical engineering, biology, biochemistry, materials science, environmental science, chemical oceanography, chemical education, or nuclear engineering (if BS is in chemistry). The Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences department has a specific need for officers holding a master's in any specialized branch of oceanography.
From the School of Humanities & Social Sciences:The Languages and Cultures Department is looking for officers that possess the Foreign Area Officer (FAO) designation and have applicable experience serving as a FAO or officers that have a master's degree (or higher) in Area Studies, International Studies, Cultural Studies, or related fields, including History, Political Science, and Literature, or Second Language Acquisition, Applied Linguistics, or related field and have a proven language proficiency via a minimum DLPT score of 2+/2+ in one or more of the following seven languages: Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, French, German, or Spanish. Candidates with a master's in language education or pedagogy and a certificate in the above-mentioned fields will also be considered. Candidates should be able to teach courses in English as well as the target language across all levels of proficiency.
The Economics Department is looking for officers with graduate degrees in an appropriate discipline, including Economics, Finance, Public Policy, MBA, or another closely related field. Candidates should be able to teach undergraduate calculus and statistics-based economics courses. Industry experience in economics is preferred but not required.
The above highlights should be seen only as additional encouragement for potential candidates. USNA will always need Core Curriculum instructors, so all eligible candidates that meet the minimum academic criterion are encouraged to apply.

Applications and Selection
To receive full consideration in the FY27 application cycle (Academic Years 2028-2030), interested officers should apply no later than 15 November 2026. Officers selected will be recalled to active duty and assigned orders as an officer-instructor three year tour commencing July 2027. Recalled officers will remain on the reserve active status list and will remain eligible for promotion consideration before reserve selection boards.
Selections will be made only after USNA placement officers are confident that USNA billets will not be filled from the active duty pool of potential officer instructors. Applicants will be made aware of their selection status by mid-January 2027. Final arrangements are contingent upon PCS funding being available through the Navy.
