McMullen Naval History Symposium
Welcome to the home of U.S. Naval Academy's McMullen Naval History Symposium. The History Department at Annapolis hosts this world-renowned event biennially to highlight the latest research on naval and maritime history from academics and practitioners all over the globe. The 2021 McMullen Symposium will be held in Annapolis, Maryland, on 23-24 September 2021. Held since 1973, the symposium has been described as the "largest regular meeting of naval historians in the world" and as the U.S. Navy's "single most important interaction with an academic historical audience."

Covid Guidance for the 2021 McMullen Naval History Symposium:
USNA will continue to monitor the changing Covid environment, as well as Federal, Department of Defense, and state and local policies, and will adjust our protocols as required to maintain the safety of midshipmen, our workforce, and guests. In-person attendees for this year's McMullen Naval History Symposium should continue to monitor their personal health, as well as their home and Annapolis-area Covid conditions.
In accordance with Department of Defense guidance as of 08 September 2021, all in-person attendees are required to either attest to being fully vaccinated, or show proof of a negative Covid test within 72-hours of their first day at the conference.
- All in person attendees are asked to fill out a DD Form 3150 (click on link) in lieu of showing a copy of their vaccination card. Please bring a signed hard copy of the form to the registration table. Leave block #2 blank. Forms will be collected at check in.Details on DD Form 3150 are found on the Department of Defense's Force Health Protection Guidance (Supplement 23) website.
***Emailed copies of DD Form 3150 or a Negative Covid test will not be accepted. All forms must be presented when picking up name tag at symposium***
- For those who received an alternate vaccination (typically individuals living outside the US), “fully vaccinated” will be based on those vaccines approved by the World Health Organization and may include alternate vaccinations (e.g., AstraZeneca/Oxford, etc.)
- Documentation of Negative Covid Test: In lieu of attesting to vaccination, individuals may present documentation (digital copy or equivalent record) of a negative Covid test (both PCR or Rapid are acceptable), conducted within 72 hours of the commencement of the event.
Masks are required at all times for all attendees when indoors, regardless of vaccination status, except while eating and drinking. When outdoors, mask wear is optional for vaccinated guests, but is required (where distancing cannot be maintained) for unvaccinated guests onboard USNA.

We are excited to announce that the 2021 McMullen Naval History Symposium will be a highly-interactive, hybrid event. We are holding our traditional, in-person conference at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland on September 23-24. At the same time, we will be completely and fully virtual as well. This means that individuals who are unable to travel to Annapolis can participate in the Symposium remotely and still enjoy the entirety of the conference experience in real-time. Virtual registrants can attend all 54 panels and interact with panelists, mingle with peers and colleagues at Symposium social events, and watch the keynote lectures by Admiral James G. Stavridis, USN (Ret.) and Dr. Kathleen Broome Williams, all in real-time. Transportation (update 13 Sep): The Symposium will provide transportation on and off the Naval Academy grounds each day. Shuttles will run from the DoubleTree Annapolis hotel and the Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium parking Lot A and B (Blue Side) to USNA Alumni Hall for drop off/pick up each day. Thursday shuttles will begin service at 0615 and continue until 2100 (last pick up @ Alumni Hall). Friday shuttles will begin at 0615 and continue until 1900 (last pick up @ Alumni Hall). Shuttles will operate in a continuous loop between the hotel, stadium, and Alumni Hall. Due to parking restrictions on Naval Academy grounds, all attendees are asked to utilize shuttle transportation to and from the symposium.

***If desired, attendees arriving in Annapolis Wednesday evening may pick up their name tags and symposium program at the Doubletree Hotel where a registration table will be set up from 1700-1900***Knox Award Dinner: The Naval Historical Foundation invites you to partake in a long-standing Sea Power Symposium tradition that has evolved into a banquet to honor the recipients of the Commodore Dudley W. Knox Medal recognizing a lifetime of achievement in naval history as scholars, mentors, and leaders. On the evening of Friday Stember 24 from 6:00PM-10:00PM NHF will present the Knox Medal to former USNA Class of 1957 Chair Dr. Kathleen B. Williams, retired Coast Guard Historian Dr. Robert Browning, and noted DoD academic, Thomas Hone. NHF will also salute our 2020 recipients former Senior Historian of the Navy Dr. Michael Crawford and noted CNA analyst Captain Peter Swartz.
