Borrowing Library Materials

Library materials may be checked out at the Circulation Desk on the first floor of the Nimitz Library or via the library’s self-checkout procedures.

Self-Checkout is available on the library’s main floor across from the Research Help Desk. Users may also checkout library materials via email by following the steps below:

  1. Take a photograph of the barcode in each of the books you would like to check out. Barcodes are usually located on the inside of the back cover of the book, but will occasionally be on the inside of the front cover. If the item does not have a barcode you must visit the checkout desk for assistance.
  2. Email your name, Alpha (or department if faculty/staff) and the barcode pictures to selfcheckout-group@usna.edu.
  3. If you are able, stop by the self-checkout station on the library’s main floor to desensitize your books so the alarm doesn’t sound when you leave the building.
  4. You will receive an email with confirmation of checkout and your due date soon..
Midshipmen
Midshipmen will be asked to provide their alpha code when checking out library materials.
Faculty and Staff
Since not all Circulation Department staff will recognize faculty and staff by sight, those not in uniform may be asked to show their USNA or military ID.
USNA Family Members
Immediate family members of civilian and military personnel assigned to the Annapolis Area command will be issued a library card when they first check out material. Either this library card or appropriate alternate ID must be shown when checking out library materials.

Missing and Damaged Library Materials

Missing and Damaged Library Materials

Library patrons are responsible for the loss of any materials they have borrowed and are unable to return. Patrons will be held liable for funding the cost to replace the missing item(s) at a minimum of $50 per item or to replace the item(s) at their expense.

Library patrons are responsible for the safekeeping of Nimitz Library materials. Damaging Library books, periodicals, audiovisuals, and other materials is prohibited. Book damage may include: stains from food or water; torn or missing pages; underlining, highlighting or otherwise marking pages. Examples of damage to audiovisual materials include scratched or broken disks, broken tapes and tape cases. Patrons will be held liable for funding the cost to replace the damaged item(s) at a minimum of $50 per item or to replace the item(s) at their expense.

Resolution for Missing and Damaged Materials

If possible, the Library would prefer the patron to replace the missing or damaged material with a new copy (same edition and publisher as the lost item). If there is a newer edition or a different publisher, the Library may accept that as a replacement. Replacement books must be new or in very good condition. The Library will not accept replacements that have highlighting, damaged bindings, or missing pages.

Sources for finding replacements (this does not represent an endorsement by Nimitz Library):

If the book or an audiovisual item cannot be replaced by the patron, they will be charged a minimum fee of $50.00. We only accept checks made out to:
