EN457: Hydrofoil & Propeller Design
Catalog Description
EN457: Hydrofoil & Propeller Design (3-0-3)
This course provides an introduction to hydrofoil and marine propeller design. Students consider lifting-line and lifting-surface theories, as applied to marine hydrodynamics and naval applications. Computer-aided design work and tow-tank experimentation supplement recitations.
Textbook
- Principles of Naval Architecture: Resistance, Propulsion, and Vibration (Lewis, 1988)
- Marine Rudders and Control Surfaces (Molland & Trunock, 2007)
- Marine Hydrodynamics (Newman, 1977)
- Hydrodynamics of Ship Propellers (Breslin & Andersen, 1994)
- Various Handouts & Selected Technical Papers
Goals
- Understand applications of computer-aided engineering tools within the field of modern naval architecture.
- Understand basic lifting-line and lifting-surface theories, as applied to hydrofoil and marine propeller design.
- Understand tow-tank experimentation processes for hydrofoil and marine propeller design.
- Develop a greater understanding of fundamental hydrodynamics concepts.
- Develop the ability to generate basic three-dimensional models/simulations.
- Develop the ability to compare/understand empirical, experimental, and numerical hydrofoil and propeller design outputs.
Prerequisites
