Command & Seamanship Training Squadron (CSTS)

CSTS provides Naval Academy Midshipmen with the opportunity to master small-unit leadership skills in a real-world setting by teaching them the fundamentals of sailing and seamanship, and testing these skills by sending sail training craft to ports as far as Portland, Maine and Brest, France. In this high stakes environment, Midshipmen must work as a team to overcome waves up to eight feet high and winds as strong as sixty miles an hour in order to safely accomplish their unit’s objective.

A typical CSTS block follows the following schedule:

            Week 1: Classroom training and sailboat familiarization

            Week 2: Local area sailing and overnight check ride

            Week 3: Underway to distant port

            Week 4: Liberty in distant port and underway to USNA

An advanced CSTS+ option is available for Midshipmen who have prior sailing experience.
