Leadership Conference

NALC 2024 Conference Panels

Panel 1: The Role of Humility in the Development of a Junior Officer

Whether trying to become more competitive for promotion or becoming a better candidate for hire in another organization, time as a small unit leader is incredibly important. We have a direct impact on who we lead and their development. Learning to Lead has to start at the beginning and finding out how to develop yourself while serving a small unit and the people that comprise it is vastly important.

Panelists:

1
LCDR Andrea Howard, USN

Panel 2: Sticking To Your “Why,” In and Out of Uniform

A person’s "Why" can drive them to do incredible things, especially when they truly believe in it. As a leader knowing, developing, and changing your why is bound to happen. We also need to learn how to use our “why” for the benefit of others, whether in leadership or other service roles. We hope to find out what that process is like and what factors are included in it.

Panelists:

Panel 3: Leading with Greater Responsibility: The Continuum of Learning

Leaders in the higher ranks of their institutions seek improvement, even though they are seen as the principal experts in leading others. We are aiming to see how these leaders continue their development of leadership even in these higher ranks, and at the same time begin to teach as well. Passing on knowledge while still accumulating it is an incredibly life skill. Learning to lead never ceases and we hope that that point is conveyed in this panel.

Panelists:

1
CAPT Tom Clarity, USN

2
CAPT Bill Hamblet, USN (Ret.)
