POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Mathematics Department at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland invites applications for an instructor position, to begin as early as the fall semester of 2026.
The Mathematics Department is the largest department at the Academy, with approximately 40 civilians with PhDs and 20 military officers with advanced degrees. The department offers majors in Operations Research, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Mathematics with Economics. Faculty members receive full federal government service benefits. Duties and responsibilities:
- Teaching approximately 12-16 contact hours per semester of calculus or introductory statistics with small section sizes (14-22 students)
- Service to the institution and department consistent with standards in the academic profession.
These are on-site, 10-month compensation model, excepted service federal positions with a 3-year renewable (non-tenure-track) appointment. These positions include full federal benefits and a highly competitive salary within the AD-01 payscale, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Minimum Qualifications:
- A Master's or Ph.D. in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Statistics, or a closely related field
- Experience (2+ years) teaching calculus and/or statistics in an undergraduate setting
Preferred Qualifications:
- Extensive experience (5+ years) teaching calculus and/or statistics in an undergraduate setting
- Facility with appropriate computational software (e.g., Desmos for calculus, Python for statistics)
- Experience mentoring students
- Demonstrated commitment to developing teaching excellence
- Evidence of course development
FINAL SELECTION FOR POSITION WILL BE BASED ON THE FOLLOWING ASSESSMENTS:
- Teaching demonstration
- Executive-level interview
- On-campus interviews
