ABOUT THE U.S. NAVAL ACADEMY PREPARATORY SCHOOL:
The Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS), located in Newport, RI, is a critical component of the United States Naval Academy (USNA) where we enhance midshipmen candidates' moral, mental, and physical foundations to prepare them for admission to, and success at USNA.
NAPS is a ten month post-secondary preparatory school, emphasizing preparation in mathematics, chemistry, English Composition, physics, and Information Technology. The students have varying education backgrounds, coming from high schools across the United States and its territories or they may be prior enlisted members of the Navy and Marine Corps. The NAPS student body (the Battalion) is selected from applicants to USNA, with each candidate being required to complete the NAPS program before being admitted as a student at USNA.
The Naval Academy has produced noted leaders, and its graduates (many of whom began their journey at NAPS) have excelled in every walk of life. As an historic officer accession program and premier undergraduate university, USNA has a unique place amongst American educational institutions. POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) invites applications for a Learning Skills Tutor to be filled as early as August 2025. The position is located at the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport, RI where the overall mission is to academically qualify selected candidates, by providing rigorous curriculum and targeted academic support, for admission to the U.S. Naval Academy.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Learning Skills Tutor will be expected to work flexible hours. The Learning Skills Tutor will provide one-on-one and group instruction reinforcing acquired skills and educational support. This includes coaching Candidates in improving time management and learning skills to balance academic, military, physical fitness, and personal needs, critical thinking, enhanced literacy of the core curriculum (math, English, physics, chemistry), and more. The tutor will support participants in a broad range of study skills areas and may teach workshops to further student success. This is an intermittent appointment with up to a maximum of 20 hours per week. It is a temporary and seasonal appointment, lasting 10 months per year.
The initial appointment length for this federal, excepted service position is approximately one year, with renewal being anticipated contingent on the performance of the incumbent during the appointment period as well as the needs and emerging plans relating to the Naval Academy Preparatory School’s Academic Department. The position is supported by gift funds. Salary for this position is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- High degree of computer literacy (must be demonstrated in resume).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in STEM major, higher education, instructional design, student affairs, counseling, or related area.
- Expertise in study skills and organization and the ability to explain concepts clearly (i.e. time management, growth mindset, organization, using Cornell Notes).
- Ability to personalize lessons and adapt to different learning styles.
- Tutoring experience or teaching experience at preparatory school or higher education.
- Familiarity with Google Suite or similar online platform.

As such, they must observe a 180 day waiting period starting from their date of retirement. USNA does not waive this waiting period requirement for excepted service positions.
Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications. Therefore, provide only the attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accrediting institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
