The Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS), located in Newport, RI, is a critical component of the United States Naval Academy (USNA) where we enhance midshipmen candidates' moral, mental, and physical foundations to prepare them for admission to, and success at USNA.
NAPS is a ten month post-secondary preparatory school, emphasizing preparation in Mathematics, Chemistry, English Composition, Physics, and Information Technology. The students come from high schools across the United States and its territories or they may be prior enlisted members of the Navy and Marine Corps. The NAPS student body (the Battalion) is selected from applicants to USNA, with each candidate being required to complete the NAPS program before being admitted as a student at USNA.
The Naval Academy has produced noted leaders, and its graduates (many of whom began their journey at NAPS) have excelled in every walk of life. As an historic officer accession program and premier undergraduate university, USNA has a unique place amongst American educational institutions. POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) invites applications for the Assistant Lacrosse Coach position to work an intermittent work schedule of no more than 15 hours a week to be filled as early as this fall. The position is located at the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport, RI where the overall mission is to academically qualify selected candidates for admission to the U.S. Naval Academy.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Assistant Lacrosse Coach will be the primary assistant to the NAPS Head Lacrosse Coach and will be required to provide a broad spectrum of coaching and administrative duties in a traditional athletic setting and in a non-traditional military environment. The lacrosse position exists to enhance efficiency in supporting the USNA physical/ athletic mission at the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS). This position is responsible to the NAPS Athletic Director and serves as a special advisor in the area of athletic development.
- Development of assigned players
- Academic advising and mentoring
- Assisting in creating and implementing practice plans.
- Conducting practice and game strategy
- Assist game setup and administrative responsibilities
- Assist with team laundry and equipment maintenance
- Maintain a safe environment of all M/C’s.
- Perform other duties assigned by NAPS Athletic Director
This is an onsite, 10-month, gift funded, federal excepted service position. This position is intermittent and will have an initial appointment of approximately 1-year with the anticipation of renewal based on performance and the availability of gift funds. Benefits are not available with this position. Maximum of 15 working hours per week, or 30 hours per pay period (two weeks), for the duration that funds are available. As an employee under a 10-month compensation model, you typically would not work within the May to July timeframe.
Salary Details:
- Pay Band: AD-01 Classification 9
- Approximate Starting Hourly Rate: $32.00
- Final Salary will be determined based on:
- Availability of funds from a gift fund.
MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum:
- A Bachelor’s Degree
- Minimum of 3 years coaching, or competing in lacrosse and demonstrating the ability to develop athletes at a high school or preparatory program level. Incumbents must display proficiency in the rules, equipment, techniques, safety and strategy of lacrosse. The coach is flexible in the challenges of coaching in a military environment.
Preferred Qualifications (We are particularly interested in candidates who have experience or demonstrated interest in some or all of the following areas):
- Incumbent displays a proficiency in lacrosse, experience with installing offense/ defense, and coaching player development within the college environment.
