ABOUT THE U.S. NAVAL ACADEMY PREPARATORY SCHOOL:
The Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS), located in Newport, RI, is a critical component of the United States Naval Academy (USNA) where we enhance midshipmen candidates' moral, mental, and physical foundations to prepare them for admission to, and success at USNA.
NAPS is a ten month post-secondary preparatory school, emphasizing preparation in mathematics, chemistry, English Composition, physics, and Information Technology. The students come from high schools across the United States and its territories or they may be prior enlisted members of the Navy and Marine Corps. The NAPS student body (the Battalion) is selected from applicants to USNA, with each candidate being required to complete the NAPS program before being admitted as a student at USNA.
The Naval Academy has produced noted leaders, and its graduates (many of whom began their journey at NAPS) have excelled in every walk of life. As an historic officer accession program and premier undergraduate university, USNA has a unique place amongst American educational institutions. POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) invites applications for the NAPS Supplemental Instructor (Learning Skills) position to be filled as early as July 2026. The position is located at the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport, RI where the overall mission is to academically qualify selected candidates for admission to the U.S. Naval Academy.
NAPS is looking for a dedicated and dynamic Supplemental Instructor (Learning Skills). This role is pivotal in preparing Midshipman Candidates for the academic rigors of the United States Naval Academy (USNA) for fostering and strengthening foundational academic habits and personal accountability. As a NAPS Supplemental Instructor (Learning Skills), you will be responsible for the academic development and mentorship of Midshipman Candidates. Your primary responsibility is to bridge the gap between high school and the high-pressure environment of USNA. You will guide students and help them transition from passive learners to active, self-aware scholars who take full ownership of their educational journey. You must be curious and well versed in how learning occurs.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Possess excellent interpersonal, organizational, written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to guide students through the phases of the study cycle: preview, attend, review, study, and assess.
- Capable of providing metacognition coaching to help students identify how they learn best and adjust their strategies in real-time allowing them to pivot and succeed.
- Assist students in developing a broad range of study skills including time management, prioritization, overcoming procrastination/distractions, note taking, physical material organization, and etc.
- Conduct workshops (i.e. Metacognition, Growth Mindset, Time Management, etc.) to help students identify their learning gaps and take proactive steps to address them. Emphasize the “Growth Mindset” and students taking the ownership of their success that is necessary for Naval service.
- Provide outreach, coaching, support, resources and additional referrals as needed to support student success.
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and other departments to advocate for students based on individual and time-sensitive needs.
- Maintain confidentiality and respectful communication when dealing with students and colleagues around sensitive issues.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
This is an on-site, 10-month salaried, federal excepted service position. This is a reimbursable funded position with an initial appointment of approximately 3-years with an anticipation of renewal of this appointment, contingent on funding and employee performance. As an employee under a 10-month compensation model, you will be required to take 343 hours of Leave-Without-Pay (LWOP) throughout the year, typically within the May to July timeframe. The ability to fill this position is contingent upon the availability of funding.
Salary Details:
- Pay Band: AD-01
- Approximate Starting Salary Range: $62,000 – $74,000
- Based on 10-month compensation model
- Final salary will be determined based on:
- Experience and qualifications of the selected candidate
- Availability of funds from reimbursable funded source (i.e., the position is supported by a designated or restricted funding source)
MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (required at the time of application).
- 2 years related teaching and/or student support experience.
Preferred Qualifications (We are particularly interested in candidates who have experience or demonstrated interest in some or all of the following areas):
- Master degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
- Previous experience teaching at the secondary or post-secondary level.
- Previous teaching experience in learning skills/student services/student affairs.
- Evidence of providing personalized, ongoing coaching and support to students to enhance their academic performance, engagement, and overall academic success.
- Development and implementation of individualized success strategies that address time management, physical material organization, study skills, critical thinking, and problem solving.
- Demonstrate a commitment to excellence, innovation, integrity, and student success.
- Proficient in the use of digital technology including learning management systems, productivity software and other digital tools relevant to the education setting.
- Experience working in a large, complex organization with multiple stakeholders.
- Ability to manage time efficiently, organize tasks, and keep detailed records.
