ABOUT THE U.S. NAVAL ACADEMY PREPARATORY SCHOOL:
The Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS), located in Newport, RI, is a critical component of the United States Naval Academy (USNA) where we enhance midshipmen candidates' moral, mental, and physical foundations to prepare them for admission to, and success at USNA.
NAPS is a ten month post-secondary preparatory school, emphasizing preparation in mathematics, chemistry, English Composition, physics, and Information Technology. The students come from high schools across the United States and its territories or they may be prior enlisted members of the Navy and Marine Corps. The NAPS student body (the Battalion) is selected from applicants to USNA, with each candidate being required to complete the NAPS program before being admitted as a student at USNA.
The Naval Academy has produced noted leaders, and its graduates (many of whom began their journey at NAPS) have excelled in every walk of life. As an historic officer accession program and premier undergraduate university, USNA has a unique place amongst American educational institutions. Our talented civilian faculty and staff are united by one common purpose - to develop the next generation of leaders for our naval service. Those selected for employment at NAPS are tasked with ensuring a select group of candidates are best prepared to enter the Naval Academy. POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) invites applications for the NAPS Supervisory Instructor (Chemistry) position to be filled as early as December 2026. The position is located at the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport, RI where the overall mission is to academically qualify selected candidates for admission to the U.S. Naval Academy.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate Classroom Effectiveness – Serve as an exemplary classroom instructor. Establish and maintain a positive classroom environment; engage students in intellectual effort, motivate individuals – in positive ways – to excel, provide context for and stimulate interest in the subject, facilitate learning with enforcement of rules, and openness to questioning. Prepare and provide clear instruction while adapting pace and depth to maximize learning.
- Provide Supervision of Division Personnel – Supervise, delegate assignments, observe, provide feedback, motivate, evaluate, develop, and correct as necessary, assigned instructors and tutors. Balance of focus among the critical elements is directed by the supervisor. Meet administrative tasks in a professional fashion, to include documenting performance. Serve on the academic leadership team. Support EEO program policies and objectives.
- Holding Employees Accountable - Ensures subordinate’s commitment to efficient work execution. Models self-accountability and holds subordinates accountable for high-quality results. Recognizes, supports, and rewards excellent work from employees supervised. Timely and efficiently addresses poor and mediocre performance of employees supervised - including seeking appropriate action up to removal from the Federal service. Takes appropriate action when employees report concerns of illegal conduct or waste, fraud, or abuse.
- Maintain Curriculum Vitality – Guide maintenance of the curriculum. Levels of difficulty challenge well prepared students and provide success experiences for all. Assessment is essential but must be accomplished with minimal disruption.
- Support School-wide Mission – Provide leadership for curricular and extracurricular activities as assigned. Participate in suitable professional development.
This is an onsite, 12-month compensation model, excepted service supervisory federal position with a 3-year renewable appointment, a highly competitive salary, and full federal benefits.
Salary Details:
- Pay Band: AD-09 Classification 13
- Approximate Starting Salary Range: $110,000 – $120,000 annually
- Based on 12-month compensation model
- Final salary will be determined based on:
- Experience and qualifications of the selected candidate
- The ability to fill this position is contingent upon the availability of funding.
MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum:
- Possess a Master’s degree in a chemistry, chemical engineering, chemistry Education or related degree from an accredited institution.
- Required at time of application
- A minimum of five (5) years of academic classroom teaching experience in chemistry at the high school/preparatory school/university level.
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience supervising academic faculty or military personnel, including direct responsibility for evaluating performance and conducting annual formal performance appraisals.
Preferred Qualifications (We are particularly interested in candidates who have experience or demonstrated interest in some or all of the following areas):
- Possess a PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, chemistry education or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
- Supervisory experience at the undergraduate or graduate level.
- Experience teaching chemistry in a classroom at a preparatory school/university level.
- Experience developing and guiding the development of chemistry curricula and instructional aides.
- Experience performing educational research.
- Experience performing statistical analyses of the curriculum to measure its effectiveness.
- Experience teaching effectively at the undergraduate level.
- Experience developing other teachers.
- Ability to serve as a role model and leader for instructors and prospective Midshipman Candidates.
- Experience and willingness to take initiative and to work with skill and judgment.
- Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
- High level of computer literacy.
FINAL SELECTION FOR POSITION WILL BE BASED ON THE FOLLOWING ASSESSMENTS:
- First Round Interview
- On campus interview, teaching demonstration, and leadership presentation
