POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Naval Architecture Program in the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering invites applications for a Professor of the Practice position with an anticipated start as early as Fall 2026.  The Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Program emphasizes project-based learning in an intensive, ABET-accredited curriculum. Class sizes are small and the research facilities, which include two towing tanks, a circulating water channel, coastal basin, structures laboratory, and propulsion laboratory, are generously equipped and staffed. Candidates should have a solid commitment to undergraduate teaching. We seek candidates who can contribute broadly in teaching and service within the program in a non-tenure position.

The successful applicant can expect to teach three to four classes, including lab courses, each semester with small class sizes (typically 10-25 students) and two to four preps per year. The department is collegial and highly collaborative, and numerous opportunities exist for teaching development. 

Duties and responsibilities

  • Teach three-to-four courses per semester in a broad range of possible Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering subjects, as needed.
  • Mentor and advise students for independent research projects and other academic needs.
  • Provide service activities for the Department, School, and Institution, including assisting in curriculum development, participating in the accreditation process, serving on committees, and other service as necessary.

This is an onsite, 10-month compensation model, excepted service federal position with an initial appointment of approximately 3-years, along with the anticipation of renewal.  We offer a highly competitive salary and full federal benefits.   Ability to fill this position is contingent upon the availability of funding.

Salary Details:  

    • Pay Band: AD-09
    • Approximate Starting Salary: $112,000 - $135,000
      • Based on 10-month compensation model
    • Final Salary will be determined based on:
      • Experience and qualifications of the selected candidate

MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree, or higher, earned in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or a closely-related engineering field, such as Ocean, Mechanical, Aerospace, Systems or Civil Engineering.

Preferred Qualifications (We are particularly interested in candidates who have experience or demonstrated interest in some or all of the following areas):

  • We encourage education and experience that can support teaching in a broad range of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering topics, such as naval ship design, maintenance, and salvage;  small craft design; ship design; ship structures; seakeeping and maneuvering; ship fabrication and manufacturability; resistance and propulsion; autonomous and uncrewed ship systems; powertrain design and machinery selection; and hybrid and electric marine propulsion.
  • More than five years of professional work experience in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or a closely-related field.
  • Excellent communication skills.

FINAL SELECTION FOR POSITION WILL BE BASED ON THE FOLLOWING ASSESSMENTS: 

  • Teaching Demonstration 
  • Presentation of the candidate’s relevant work experience 
  • Reference Check
  • On campus interviews
  • Executive-Level Interview

The selected candidate will be subject to a security investigation leading to successful completion of a background investigation with a favorable adjudication. NOTICE TO RETIRING MILITARY: Retired service members cannot be appointed to DOD civilian positions within 180 days of retiring. As such, they must observe a 180 day waiting period starting from their date of retirement. USNA does not waive this waiting period requirement for excepted service positions.

Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications. Therefore, provide only the attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accrediting institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
