POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership at the United States Naval Academy, located in Annapolis, Maryland, invites applications for the Deputy Director position to begin as early as Spring 2026.  The mission of the Stockdale Center is to empower leaders to make courageous ethical decisions. The Center’s primary audience is the Naval Academy community - midshipmen, staff, faculty and coaches - yet the Center also shares ethical leadership insights with influential national and international leaders and organizations.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Assist the Director with the leadership of the Stockdale Center, and serve as the acting director during the Director’s absence.
  • Supervise the Center staff and coordinate internal administration, external contracts, and Center special events.
  • Coordinate with Naval Academy cost centers and special staff to facilitate Center programs and activities.
  • Oversee the development and execution of the Center’s gift and appropriated fund budgets, to include coordinating with the Naval Academy Alumni Association and Foundation to support their efforts to obtain private funding for the Center.
  • Coordinate with the Deputy Commandant of Leadership and Character Development to ensure the Stockdale Center remains aligned with the Commandant’s priorities.
  • Interface with external organizations requesting support from the Academy in the fields of leadership, character and ethics.
  • Present ethical leadership lectures and seminars for midshipmen, staff, faculty, coaches and external institutions.
  • Mentor midshipmen, staff, faculty and coaches to strengthen their leadership proficiency.
  • Represent the Academy on external committees and task forces.

This is an onsite, gift-funded, excepted service federal position.  Appointment consists of a 12-month compensation model with an approximate 3-year renewable appointment, a highly competitive salary and full federal benefits, given available gift funding. Starting salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Salary Details:  

    • Pay Band: AD-09 (Classification 13)
    • Approximate Starting Salary: $110,000 - $135,000 annually
    • Final Salary will be determined based on:
      • Experience and qualifications of the selected candidate
      • Availability of funds from a gift fund (i.e., the position is supported by a designated or restricted funding source)

MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Minimum Qualifications: Required at time of application

  • Master's degree
  • 2 years of experience in strategic planning
  • 2 years experience in budget management
  • 2 years experience in personnel management

Preferred Qualifications (We are particularly interested in candidates who have experience or demonstrated interest in some or all of the following areas):

  • Senior civilian academic with higher-education teaching and administrative experience, OR former military personnel with operational, administrative and education/training experience
  • Extensive experience with teaching, public speaking and seminar facilitation in the fields of ethics and leadership and a reputation for excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience interacting with high-level officials in the military, business, government and higher education
  • Experience supervising a collegial and efficient work group
  • Terminal degree

FINAL SELECTION FOR POSITION WILL BE BASED ON THE FOLLOWING ASSESSMENTS: 

  • Executive level interview
  • On campus interviews

  • All civilian faculty positions at USNA are subject to a background investigation. These investigations are conducted to ensure that individuals hired are trustworthy, of good conduct, and reliable. The selected candidate will be subject to a security investigation leading to successful completion of a background investigation with a favorable adjudication. The selectee's failure to meet this requirement will be grounds for termination. NOTICE TO RETIRING MILITARY: Retired service members cannot be appointed to DOD civilian positions within 180 days of retiring. As such, they must observe a 180 day waiting period starting from their date of retirement. USNA does not waive this waiting period requirement for excepted service positions.

Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications. Therefore, provide only the attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accrediting institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
