POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Class of 1963 Center for Academic Excellence invites applications for an intermittent professional Writing & Communication Center tutor to begin as early as Spring 2026. As a member of this academic support unit, the tutor will provide one-on-one assistance to students with public speaking, presentation skills, interview preparation, and other types of professional communication skills. Additionally, the tutor will provide one-on-one assistance to students at any stage of the writing process, from brainstorming to the final draft. The tutor will work up to 20 hours per week during open business hours: Monday through Friday, 0745-1600. To qualify, individuals must have a Master's degree in a writing-intensive or communication-focused field. The ideal candidate would also have teaching experience in composition/literature, professional writing and/or business communication courses and two years of experience tutoring in a Writing Center or Writing & Communication Center setting. 

Duties and responsibilities

  • Communication Support: 

    • Conduct one-on-one, in-person consultations focused on professional communication skills, including but not limited to: 
      • Public speaking and oral presentations 
      • Interview preparation 
      • Professional and leadership communication 
    • Assist students in organizing ideas, refining delivery, and developing confidence as communicators 
    • Potentially design and facilitate specialized communication workshops for midshipmen 

     

  • Writing Support: 

    • Conduct one-on-one, in-person writing consultations at any stage of the writing process, from brainstorming and organization to revision and final drafts 
    • Support a wide range of academic and professional writing genres, including research papers, STEM writing, and application materials

     

  • Administrative and Center Responsibilities: 

    • Maintain appropriate student records and submit reports and data as requested 
    • Attend meetings and complete required training sessions 
    • Collaborate effectively with Center staff and faculty to support student success 


    This is an onsite, gift funded, federal excepted service position. This position is intermittent and will have an initial appointment of approximately 1-year with the anticipation of renewal based on performance and the availability of gift funds. Benefits are not available with this position. Maximum of 20 hours per week.

Salary Details:  

    • Salary Range: $33.01 - $45.63/hour

    • Final Salary will be determined based on:
      • Experience and qualifications of the selected candidate
      • Availability of funds from a gift fund (i.e., the position is supported by a designated or restricted funding source)

MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have a Master's degree in a writing-intensive or communication-focused field from an accredited institution 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Tutoring experience in a Writing Center or Writing & Communication Center setting 
  • Experience teaching composition, professional writing, and/or business communication course(s) at the college level 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills 
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and student body

FINAL SELECTION FOR POSITION WILL BE BASED ON THE FOLLOWING ASSESSMENTS: 

  • Virtual/On Campus interviews
  • Executive level interview

NOTICE TO RETIRING MILITARY: Retired service members cannot be appointed to DOD civilian positions within 180 days of retiring. As such, they must observe a 180 day waiting period starting from their date of retirement. USNA does not waive this waiting period requirement for excepted service positions.

Therefore, provide only the attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accrediting institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
