Matthew Gordon, M.S.
Matthew L. Gordon is a Doctor of Psychology candidate at Loyola University Maryland. His role at the United States Naval Academy is as an extern and psychotherapist. He has a special interest in working with young adults who struggle with adjustment issues, anxiety, depression, and trauma.
In 2022, Matt earned his B.A. in Psychology from the Honors College at Georgia State University. In 2024, he earned his M.S. in Clinical Psychology from Loyola University Maryland en route to his doctoral degree. He has trained in a variety of clinical settings, including his prior position at the Veterans Affairs. Additionally, outside of the USNA, Matt provides psychotherapy and psychoeducational evaluations to a small caseload of clients in private practice. Matt’s theoretical orientation is integrative and rooted in Cognitive Behavioral, Humanistic, and Psychodynamic frameworks.
Matt currently serves in two leadership positions within the American Psychological Association (APA). He serves on the Ethics Committee for the Society for Military Psychology (Division 19), and also on the Science Committee for the Division of Trauma Psychology (Division 56). Previously, he has served on the Mental Health Taskforce at Loyola University Maryland and completed a fellowship at the Psychoanalytic Training Institute of the Contemporary Freudian Society. Additionally, he served as Psi Chi (International Honor Society in Psychology) President at Georgia State University before continuing his involvement as Graduate Student Liaison at Loyola University Maryland.
Broadly, Matt’s research has focused on serious mental illness, substance use, aggression, genetics, and sleep. Matt will defend his dissertation, Attitudes, Opinions, and Uses of the DSM-5-TR Among Psychologists in Independent Practice, in August of 2025.
In his free time, Matt enjoys weightlifting, spending time in nature, and tending to his houseplants.
