Command Senior Chief (SWIW) Kathryn Whittenberger
Senior Chief Petty Officer Kathryn J. Whittenberger enlisted in the Navy, arriving at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes in July, 2000. Following attendance at the Navy’s Journalist “A” School she reported to USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN-71), deploying in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM and OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM.
In July 2004, Senior Chief Whittenberger transferred to Commander, Logistics Group Western Pacific (COMLOGWESTPAC), Singapore, as the assistant Public Affairs Officer. During this tour she was the COMLOGWESTPAC Sailor of the Year for 2005 and 2006, and directly supported tsunami relief efforts in Southeast Asia. She reported to Commander, U.S. FIFTH FLEET, Bahrain, in September 2006 as the Leading Petty Officer for the Public Affairs Office.
In April 2007, she reported to Naval Special Warfare Group TWO, Virginia Beach, VA. Upon earning the rank of Chief Petty Officer, she transferred to Naval Special Warfare Group FOUR, Virginia Beach, VA. During these tours she deployed frequently to CENTCOM, AFRICOM and SOUTHCOM. Senior Chief Whittenberger then transferred to Expeditionary Combat Camera, Norfolk, VA. She deployed to Bahrain as the Combat Camera OIC, and later in support of Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan, serving as the Combat Camera OIC and overall Navy Element Senior Enlisted Advisor.
Senior Chief Whittenberger reported to the Defense Information School as the Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of the Public Affairs Leadership Department. In this role she supported courses focused on students ranging from E-5 to O-6 from all services, government agencies, and international counterparts.
Senior Chief Whittenberger reported to USS GERALD R. FORD (CVN 78) as the Media Department Leading Chief Petty Officer in October 2015, playing a key role in two Presidential visits and the ship’s commissioning. She was selected as a Command Senior Chief in February 2017, and attended the Senior Enlisted Academy in August 2017.
Senior Chief Whittenberger’s personal awards and achievements include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (six awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (five awards), Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist, Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist, Enlisted Information Warfare Specialist and Enlisted Expeditionary Warfare Specialist.Master Chief Edney enlisted in the United States Navy in August, 1999 and completed Basic Training, and Firemen Apprentice training in Great Lakes, Illinois.
